The wrong default
Many founders default to an agency because it feels safer: a bench, a PM, a deck. For zero-to-one products that need architectural judgment, the safer-looking option often produces:
- slow decision loops
- generic stacks
- handoff debt when the contract ends
A founding / lead engineer (fractional or intensive) owns the riskiest path in the repo — then leaves something a later team can grow.
When an agency is fine
- Brochure / marketing site with clear scope
- Staffing a known pattern with little invention
- You already have a strong technical owner internally
When a founding engineer is the better bet
- Greenfield MVP with web + backend (± Android)
- AI / realtime / data paths that cannot be “WordPress + plugins”
- You need someone who will cut the roadmap honestly
Proof on this site spans both ventures (FluxDial, MandiPe) and client / lead-engineer delivery (Ronron, Divine Care, JDL Solicitors). See Work and Hire.
How engagements usually start here
- Short brief: product, timeline, budget band
- Fit call
- Written scope before build
Lanes: MVP product build · Fractional founding engineer
